I started my beautiful day with smile on my face because I am going to explore the Central park for the first time. I heard about central park many time but never get a chance to visit. I met my class at Penn station and we headed to East Harlem, which is also referred to as " Spanish Harlem"due to majority of the spanish community. East Harlem is located in Uptown Manhattan that has experiencing gentrification (ENY pg. 75). In 19 nth century, there are many ethnic group like the Irish, German and Europeans immigrants. After world war I majority of Puerto Ricans started living in the area (ENY pg. 76). Poverty was the main problem among immigrants which brought so much violence to the area. Our first destination is the Museum of the city of New York, which was a museum that had amazing art work that really embraced the culture of East Harlem. I was very impressed by the area and graffiti artists were trying to tell story of their lives by graffiti very impressive. They live very hard life and worked very hard great respect for all those great people. I know some people are against graffiti but after visiting East Harlem and the Museum. I believe graffiti is just belong to New York its a part of New York in other words. I watched 20 minutes film that explained how New York city born, built. Its so impressive that city is rich with culture, people and history. The film explained alot about how people waork as a team and make the city most popular in the world. After the Museum we went to the El Museo Del Barrio where we met an brilliant tour guide who is rich with talent name Luke. Luke is an excellent person who love and respect his neighbourhood. He started his introduction with a poem which I have posted for all you in the end of the journal the was a tour guide like no other. He really want you to understand East Harlem and the people there. When the immigrants came from puerto rico they had nothing but now they made there lives better by working very hard. I am very impressed with the rich culture and the history behind all the graffiti and painting on the walls of East Harlem. As we were walking Luke explained us about Mexican artist Frida Kaho and Puerto Rican poet Julia Burgos ( ENY pg. 78). I love the Art work and women art which represent how pwerful the women are we also went to " Justo Bontanica" store was opened in the 1930's by Jorge Vargas. This is very religious shop with herbal medicines. It was very interesting to me to know that not only in India people from other countries also have faith in Spritual things. After that I had Boritos in lunch. After that we went to central park is very huge and gourgeous with numerous amount of activies. The park has beautiful lakes, pounds and small forests which is just gorgeous to me ( ENY, pg 63). The park is designed by Frederick law olmsted and envisioned the park to be a naturalistic landscape, and vehicles can all occup (ENY, pg 63). The Central Park is first major park in the United states (ENY, pg 64). Around early 20 th century, the park was rehabiliated the by Mayour Friorella Laguardia and Robert Moses ( ENY, pg 64). The park was divided into two sections, the upper and lower sides. The park is very beautiful and even many bollywood shooted scenes in the central park. We also walked to the strawberry Feilds the dedicated to aformer Beattle and activist John Lennon. Because of Lennon's countless activities for peace. Mayor Ed Kochin 1985, dedicated a 2.5 acre site on the western edge of Central Park ( ENY, pg 70). In summary, I enjoyed the beautiful day and sees the central park for the first time which is just gorgeous. I love the way Professor Mike and Professor Daiman give us information about important sites which is very interesting.I love New york city and every little thing which makes the New york city great in the world. I am looking forward to explore more.
6) Harlem / Morning Side Heights/ Time Square =
What a gorgeous morning :) I am feeling wonderful and very excited beacuse I am going to explore Time square, I love visiting time square. I met my class at Penn station we started our day by exploring Harlem. We started walking along Manhattan, I noticed the beautiful buildings in the area and nice view. Each building is very beautiful and has amazing structure. In 1960's 6th ave had buildings that had a moderinst/ international style which had to do with the massive expansion that was occuring around the time the avenue was established. I like the are 42 nd street Time square. The area is full of fun which is never ending, all people were having fun walking enjoying food some are dancing. I love the people wearing cartoon characters on the street. After that we walked further to Rockfeller center / NBC studios, located in the famous GE building.I love the building thge area is the home to television legacies. Professor Russo gave us information about the kind of srt work that was displayed. All of the art work in the building represented propaganda and how the government oversees the " little people". "Little people" mean the individual don't have a voice because they are not high ranking politicians or members of the elite. The building is rich with art and is very beautiful and has alot of restaurants and shopping areas and each shop seems to be more elegant then another. After that we went to the MOMA (Museum of Modern Art). The MOMA is full of beautiful and amazing art it is very gorgeous. I didnot went to many Museums so I feel very excited whenever I have a chance to visit Museum. Professor Damian explain us different types of art and I love he gave us alot of information. He told us that there is representational, symbolic, indexical, iconic, and abstract artists that formulate their ideas in away that to some might be obvious and to others not so clear. I am so much in love with Pablo Picasso art work and I also like Willen de kooning art work. Professor Mike told us about art and what the story behind the art. After that we went to Hell's Kitchen where we are going to Thai food. I was very excited because I never had Thai food before. I was very tired and hungry by the time we reached to the Hell's kichten. I had a spring roll and cashew chicken with white rice, which I just love very flavourful and delicious. After lunch we walked to the train station and took a ride to Morning side heights located in upper west side or also known as " Greater Harlem" (ENY pg 80). Also, the area became notable for being one of George Washington's first victories during the war (ENY, pg 80).Morning side Heights had a major turning point around 1904 when the JRT train service began running (ENY pg 81). Columbia University buying alot of the area because of down economy. Columbia University is now the largest poperty owners (ENY pg 81). We met our tour guide Jim in the Morning side heights he provided us information about the Cathedral chruch. In 1892, the construction for Cathedral church began and when it completed it was the largest in the United states ( ENY pg 81). The Cathedral church has a gothic style structure, which is just gorgeous from outside. The church is so so beautiful from inside I cannot forget how beautiful it was my all tiredness went away after seeing the church. After the church, we walked towards the Columbia University, professor Mike told us that the President Obama went there as a graduate student there.Columbia was the first college established in New York and only the fifth in the United states (ENY ,pg 83). The University was located in the lower Manhattan in 1754, which at the time was known as kings college. After the Revolution the college was relocated and renewed Columbia (ENY pg 83). We was low Memorial library, which is gorgeous from outside to me and it looks like is in the center. There is a Statue of Alma Mata, which is symbol of college in front of library (ENY pg 84). After that we walked to Riverside Park, which is one of only " five" designated landmarks in NYC to 158th street along the Hudson river (ENy pg 85). When we walked north through the park, crossing the Riverside Drive west, we ended up in the general grant national memorial Ulyssess grant was a commander of the Union army during the civil war and the President of the United States around 1869-1877. After him and his wife died the tombs were created from white granite and have been established in the memorial for people of all ages to visit. Our next destination for today was morning side park. The park was located on 120nd street and is 3 acres wide. The park was designed and created by Frederick law olmsted and calvert vaux in 1867. The creation of the financial panic of 1873 (ENY pg 86).During the 1970's the park had a reputation for violence and being a place that was dangerous. Our last stop was in the Harlem, which is uptown. The Harlem was established as a Dutch community but when the english took control of the Dutch calony, they tried to change the name of the community ( ENY pg. 87). Harlem was full of colors, music, people and food. All the people there are having good time enjoying the resources full and happly.
7) Lower Manhattan =
I am not feeling good today little sick with fever but excited that we are going to explore more :) New York city. I met my class at the Penn station and we started walking towards the subway to take E train to the last stop, which is the World trade center. I went there many times but whenever I go there its make me very sad and my heart goes with all the families who lost there loved ones. I am very emotional person and I always start thinking how the families of the people who lost their lives living without them its very hard . In 19th century the Lower Manhattan became the home of Wall Street, which is nation's largest corporation (ENY pg. 39). The area of Lower Manhattan suffered alot on September 11, 2001, where the Twin towers were attacked and destroyed. When I got there I saw the St. Paul Church, which was built in 1764 and is the oldest. Standing in front of the St Paul's, I am looking at the sky. Peaceful sky. The spire of the oldest church in the city silhouettes against the blue, and next to it, new Freedom Tower shining in morning sun rays.Old and new. Past, present and future. Sometimes, history is what we learn from text books. And sometimes, history is what we live through. St. Paul's Chapel was standing proud thru September 11, lending helping hand, offering shelter and support. Standing proud still, history in place. And here we are, standing next to it, hearts filled with memories and love for this city and it's people. According to Mike during the 9/11 tragedy the reason why church was not damaged because of a very old tree that blocked debris and other materials from harming the church. After that we start walking and than we saw the Woolworth building, which is a neo-gothic style skyscraper. The building was designed by Cass Gilbert and was completed around 1913 where it was one of the early skyscraper of its time (ENY pg. 46). I love the building just amazing how they built that with so much perfection in there work. Professor Mike told us that Woolworth wanted such a tall building because he wanted to be able see the building from Brooklyn Bridge. The building was the tallest until Chrysler buiding was built in 1930s. The area referred to the civic center because the neighborhood houses most of the city's governmental offices (ENY, pg 40). The office of the Mayor and city council are located in the New York city hall. The first city hall was established in in 17nth century by the Dutch on peral street ( ENY pg 40). New York city hall was completed in 1811 (ENY pg. 41). The Municipal building is the largest government building in the world ( ENY pg. 42). Municipal building is currently having thirteen agencies of the New York city ( ENY pg. 42). Than I went to Foley Square, which is named after Tammany hall district leader thomas F. The 48 acre pound, was the source of the city's water supply for fresh drinking water ( ENY pg 43). After that I went to the African Burial Ground national monument, which is located on the first floor of the Ted weiss federal building. The beautiful structure states " For all those were lost, for all those who were stolen, for all those who were left behind, for all those who were not forgotten" is a very power message of hope. WE watched 20 minute movie which was very emotional and touching it shows how African Americans were treated. In 1690 to 1794 it is estimated around 20,000 Africans and slaves were buried in 6.6 acre ground, and in 2007it became a historical memorial (ENY pg 45). After that we went to lunch to Hudson Eats, located in Battery Park. I found it little expensive and I didnot like the food at all. I ate Burrito which is not tasty at all :( sorry Hudson eats. After that we went to Trinity church which is located on the western end of wall street. This Gothic revival church has beautiful building. The courtyard outside church has this Trinity Root, which is a bronze sculpture by Steve Tobin who created a memorial of the tree that protected St. Paul's church from the debris of 9/11 (ENY pg. 50). After that we started walking towards the Ferry stop to get a Ferry to Governors Island we paid $2 each. Governor Island also known as "Paggank" and "Nut Island" beacsue it has nuts tree ( ENY pg 57). The area is used by the United States army before now it just for residential porpurses. I love Governor Island so much its really beautiful and peacefull there. I am planning to come with my family and visit again :).
8) Lower EasT Side =
My last class feeling little sad but looking forward to explore more and enjoy my last day with great class. I met all my class at Penn Station we took F train to Delancey street and started exploring Lower east side which is located on the southeastern part of Manhattan ( ENY pg,65). In 1880s a staggering amount of Jewish immigrants from Eastern Europe occupied the area where they gave the neighbourhoods character. Ashkenazi Jeweish settled in thee area came to the United States with money (ENY pg 66). they faced many problems . We went to Kossar's bagel and bialys shop and Professor Mike is so nice he bought everyone bagels and bialys we all went to sweard park and enjoyed our treat there and met our amazing tour guide Jim . After that Jim and we start walking and exploring more Lower east side and he told us that across the park the building is big Jewish newpaper that over the years has experienced several changes to expand the newspaper. He aslo gave us information about Essex place. Jim told us that business are not doing well here because the population is mostly old and live on stamps. The synagogue was founded in 1865 by Jews who came from Poland (ENY pg 68).I like the area and the buildings. After that we came across many chinies places and our final stop was at a restaurant Congee village chinese which I just love. As I walked inside the restaurant with my class it was gorgeous and very clean. I became so excited to see and try there food Mike ordered food for us which is so delisious my mouth is still watery Thankyou Mike the place is just beautiful :). After the delicious lunch we all ready to go home but all are little sad to say goobye. It is one of the best memories I have in my life.
